German Watchtower
At the top of Mt. Krithina above the village of Velanidia is yet another watchtower overlooking the Myrtoon and Kythera Seas. This large stone structure was built during World War II by the German occupation force as a naval watchtower and radio communications centre for ships and aircraft. After the war it was looted by locals.
Access is via a steep, marked hiking trail from Velanidia. The view across the Myrtoon Sea to Crete is well worth the uphill hike.
